One morning in August 1979, India's first Satellite Launch Vehicle lifted off the pad at Sriharikota and came apart in the sky within minutes. Kalam, the mission's project director, expected to face the press alone and explain the failure. Instead, his chairman, Satish Dhawan, walked out and took the blame himself, in front of every camera in the room, without naming a single engineer.
That afternoon taught Kalam more about leadership than a decade of engineering had. It's the real subject of this page, not the rockets themselves. Kalam's public formula was that dreams become thoughts, and thoughts become action — what the formula leaves out is what happens when the action fails. His answer, tested first on a launchpad and later in a president's office and a classroom, stayed the same each time: absorb the failure, extract what it teaches, and hand the credit for what comes next to whoever is standing closest to the work.
