In early 1913, building a Ford Model T chassis took twelve hours and twenty-eight minutes. A team of workers walked the chassis through the Highland Park plant from station to station, gathering parts and fitting them as they went — skilled work, done well, and slow.

By that April, Ford's production engineers had already proven a faster method on a much smaller job: assembling a magneto flywheel, broken into twenty-nine separate operations performed by twenty-nine different workers, had cut assembly time from twenty minutes to five. The team extended the same logic to the whole chassis. Workers stayed in fixed positions; the chassis itself moved past them, first pulled by a rope and windlass, parts arriving in the exact sequence and quantity each station needed. Assembly time fell to five hours and fifty minutes. Then, once the conveyor's speed itself became a dial someone could simply turn up, it fell again — to ninety-three minutes.

The car hadn't changed. The line had. And the difference between twelve hours and ninety-three minutes was, in a very literal sense, the difference between a Model T only the wealthy could afford and a Model T fifteen million people eventually owned.

It came at a cost the price tag never showed. The same monotony that made a chassis in ninety-three minutes sent Highland Park's annual worker turnover past 300 percent — few people wanted to stand in one place repeating one motion for ten hours a day. Ford's fix, announced in January 1914, was blunt: pay roughly double the going wage, and let the line's speed, not the worker's judgment, do the rest of the work.

That tradeoff — extraordinary efficiency purchased at the price of the worker's own control over their pace — is the thread running through everything else on this page.

Core Philosophy

Ford's obsession wasn't really the automobile — it was time. Every redesign of the Highland Park plant was, underneath, a redesign of how many seconds a task should take, and the moving assembly line was the logical endpoint of that obsession: fix the worker in place, subdivide the job into single repeatable motions, and let a conveyor — not a person — set the pace. The genius was real, and so was the cost. Turnover at Highland Park reportedly climbed past 300 percent a year once the line went in, because the monotony was close to unbearable at the speed the line demanded. Ford's answer wasn't to slow the line down. It was the five-dollar day.

He never redesigned the job to make it more human. He paid people enough to tolerate a job that wasn't.

The breakthrough wasn't making anyone work faster. It was removing the choice of pace from the worker entirely and handing it to the machine.

  • The moving assembly line is often credited to Ford personally, but the engineering was largely the work of his production team — particularly Charles Sorensen, William Klann, Peter E. Martin, and Clarence Avery — with Ford providing direction, resources, and final authority rather than the line's technical design.
  • Ford used his own newspaper, the Dearborn Independent, to publish antisemitic material through much of the 1920s, most notoriously reprinted as "The International Jew." He issued a public apology and retraction in 1927 under threat of a lawsuit. It remains one of the most serious, well-documented parts of his biography, separate from — but not erasable from — his manufacturing legacy.

The line Ford built was never really about cars. It was about proving that a task, broken into small enough pieces and paced by a machine instead of a person, could be repeated forever without slowing down. Fifteen million Model Ts later, the proof held. What it cost the people standing at the line is a separate ledger — one Ford tried to settle, imperfectly, with five dollars a day.
