In February 1882, walking through a park in Budapest at sunset, reciting Goethe's Faust from memory with a friend, Nikola Tesla stopped mid-sentence. He had seen it — not sketched, not calculated, seen: a magnetic field that rotated, and a motor built to spin inside it with no sparking contacts and no commutator, nothing but the field itself doing the work. By his own account, the whole machine arrived complete in that instant, and he sketched its outline in the sand with a stick to hold onto it before it faded.
That instant is the real subject of this page, more than any patent or power station that followed. Tesla didn't refine his way to the induction motor through trial and error at a bench. He built it complete in his mind first — construction, operation, wear — and only afterward let his hands catch up to what his imagination had already finished.
