In December 1979, Steve Jobs walked into a research lab at Xerox PARC and watched a demonstration that lasted perhaps ten minutes. A researcher moved a small device across a desk, and a pointer moved with it on a screen full of overlapping windows and little pictures instead of typed commands. Jobs would later say he was so excited he could barely speak. Within days, he had reorganized part of Apple's engineering team around building a machine that could do the same thing — not for researchers, but for anyone.
That moment is the real subject of this page, more than any single product that followed. Jobs didn't invent the graphical interface, the mouse, or the personal computer. What he had, again and again, was the instinct to recognize something built for a narrow, technical purpose and see, immediately, what it would take to hand it to an ordinary person — and then the discipline to cut away everything standing in the way.

Taste, in Jobs' hands, was not decoration. It was a form of engineering discipline — the discipline of deciding, ruthlessly and repeatedly, what a thing is for, and refusing to ship anything less than the version that felt obvious in hindsight. But the same intensity that produced "insanely great" products also strained the people who had to build them fast enough to keep up with him. The lesson isn't that everything deserves that standard. It's knowing which few things do.

Decide how something should feel to use before deciding how to build it, then hold the engineering to that decision instead of letting the engineering define the feeling.

The real work was deciding what to leave out. A product was defined as much by what didn't ship as by what did — fewer buttons, fewer ports, fewer options, until only the essential choice remained.

Every candidate feature was measured against whether it diluted the one thing the product was actually for. Good ideas were rejected constantly, not because they were bad, but because they weren't this idea.

He wanted to own hardware, software, and the store it was sold in, so no outside seam — a chipmaker's roadmap, a carrier's app store — could compromise an experience he'd already decided on.
